"Navigating the Complexities of Adult Learning: Strategies for Career Transition and Flight Training

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Learning as an adult can be a daunting and complex process. Adult learners are often faced with several layers of learning that can be difficult to navigate and can create a significant amount of stress and anxiety.

The first layer of learning for adult learners is the knowledge gap. As adults, we often feel the need to “catch up” on the knowledge that we may have missed from our childhood and teenage years.

The second layer of learning for adult learners is the cognitive dissonance we may experience in the classroom.

The third layer of learning for adult learners is the lack of support and resources. Overcoming these layers of learning can be difficult, but there are a few strategies that may help.

As adult learners undertaking flight training, it is important to be realistic in our expectations and to take small steps to bridge the knowledge gap between our current understanding and that of our peers. It is also important to reach out for help and resources when needed.

Flight schools often have instructors or mentors who can provide guidance and support. For example, an adult learner who is struggling with their studies may benefit from reaching out for help from an instructor or mentor. The mentor can provide guidance about study habits, practice tests, and other resources that can help the student reach their goals.

Another example is an adult learner who is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material they need to cover. This student may benefit from breaking down the material into smaller chunks and focusing on one topic at a time.

Or an adult learner who is feeling discouraged by the amount of time it takes to become a pilot may benefit from finding a supportive network of peers and instructors who can provide encouragement and motivation.

Finally, it is important to remember that learning is a continuous process and the journey to becoming a pilot and maybe making a successful career change is full of challenges but also full of rewards. With the right approach, resources, and attitude, adult learners can overcome any challenge and achieve their goals.
